Consider trying to use the full width of the screen for a large display, for example, of a long formula obtained from a cell in Excel. That cannot be done in a task pane, which has an unreasonably small limit on its width. Nor can it be done in a dialog box because the box has no way to obtain information from the document.

Not only should it be possible to resize a task pane, but there should be no limit on its width when it is not docked, both in the online and desktop versions of Office 365. Excel for the Mac can use an the entire screen, but task pane width is limited to less than half an iMac screen's width (there is no limit on task pane height).
